At The Scott Resort & Spa, Havana Meets the Desert

In Scottsdale, Arizona, where the desert light washes buildings in warm tones and palms sway against an endless sky, The Scott Resort & Spa has been remade into something that feels both transportive and rooted. Once the Firesky, the property has been reimagined by AvroKO into a layered retreat where Spanish Revival bones meet the warmth and informality of Havana.

The design draws guests in through atmosphere rather than spectacle. Cane screens cast patterns of shadow across stucco walls; curved brass chandeliers, inspired by Bauhaus geometry, hang above vintage Cuban artwork; potted olive trees blur the line between indoors and out. At every turn, rattan furniture anchors the mood—its natural texture lending softness to stone floors, tiled bars, and white arches.

Handwoven alurattan seating flows around a warm fire pit, creating an inviting outdoor space nestled among the trees.

Furniture selections, sourced through Designerie, play a starring role in the narrative. By the pool, airy cabanas are outfitted with Maggie sofas and Arne Jacobsen’s Charlottenborg chairs, their rounded rattan frames echoing the curve of the sun overhead. Fire pits are encircled by Monet and Fox chairs, which seem almost to blossom out of the patio stones. Dining areas are set with Margaret and Piano chairs, sturdy yet graceful, while Franco Albini’s ottomans scatter across terraces like sculptural punctuation marks.

The effect is less about a singular style than about a layering of atmospheres. The tiled bar, lined with rattan stools, glows in the afternoon light; vintage artwork and indoor landscaping create intimate nooks; cabanas draped in striped fabric offer respite from the desert sun. Each vignette channels the spirit of a Havana front porch—unhurried, hospitable, and alive with conversation—translated into the heart of the American Southwest.

Rattan is essential to that translation. Light yet resilient, it carries with it a long lineage of handcraft, evoking both tropical verandas and mid-century patios. At The Scott, its presence is more than nostalgic. The material’s open weave allows air and light to move through it, softening the architecture while connecting guests more directly to the environment around them.
